Acupuncture

Acupuncture was developed over 2,000 years ago as technique of Chinese Medicine and is utilized today as part of a comprehensive approach to healthcare that also includes practices like herbal medicine, physical medicine, exercise, and dietary therapy.

The ancient Chinese believed in a universal life energy known as Qi (pronounced “chee”) that is present in every living creature. Similar to the circulatory system for blood and lymph, there is a system for this vital life force energy. Qi travels throughout the body along specific pathways called Meridians or channels. When this energy flows freely through the Meridians, good health is maintained. However, if the flow of energy is blocked, it can lead to pain and dysfunction. By stimulating acupuncture points, this technique aims to balance the flow of Qi, promote natural healing, and improve overall well-being.

Acupuncture can help alleviate stress, improve energy, reduce pain, improve athletic performance and enhance sleep quality by encouraging the body’s self-regulating mechanisms.

How many treatments are needed?

The number of acupuncture treatments needed can vary depending on individual health conditions and goals. Typically, an initial series of treatments spans six weeks, with sessions held once or twice a week. After this initial period, we conduct a thorough reevaluation to assess progress and determine the next steps in the treatment plan. Some conditions may require ongoing sessions to maintain optimal health and well-being, while others might benefit from a maintenance schedule with less frequent visits or only as-needed visits.

What does a treatment feel like?

Acupuncture is typically well-tolerated and brings about a sense of relaxation and well-being. When the fine needles are inserted into specific points on the body, you might feel a slight pinch followed by a mild tingling, warmth, or a slight pressure sensation. This is referred to as “deqi,” indicating the arrival of Qi at the acupuncture point. Most patients find the process to be relaxing, and many even fall asleep during the treatment. The overall sensation can vary from person to person. Your provider will rely on your feedback to adjust or change the needles to meet your comfort level.
